In collaboration with ZSports Events SA, the iconic Bellbuoy Challenge will be proudly operated by AWEHNESS — bringing new energy, passion and purpose to one of the most respected swims in the ocean swimming world.

There is something different about the ocean in Gqeberha.

Standing on Pollok Beach at sunrise, staring toward the distant bellbuoy beyond the breakers, every swimmer feels the same thing: Respect.

Over the years, Bellbuoy has welcomed Olympians, world champions, hardened ocean athletes and everyday swimmers chasing something bigger than a medal. It became legendary not for the distance — but for the courage it demands.

This year, swimmers will enter one of four categories:

Elite Wetsuit – racing for prize money with no outside assistance.
Elite Non-Wetsuit – for traditionalists taking on the ocean in its purest form.
Social Wetsuit – embracing the challenge with the support of seconds and sighters.
Social Non-Wetsuit – a raw open water experience built on courage and grit.

The Bellbuoy Challenge also proudly welcomes disabled swimmers across both Elite and Social categories, celebrating the spirit of inclusion and extraordinary determination that defines this iconic event.

But make no mistake — whether elite or social, wetsuit or non-wetsuit, Bellbuoy demands respect from everyone.

By entering, swimmers confirm they are fit, prepared and brave enough to tackle one of South Africa’s toughest ocean swims. In line with international open water swimming rules, entrants must be at least 14 years old in the year of the race.

All swimmers must have previously completed a minimum 3km open water swim qualification, and organisers reserve the right to request proof of competency and experience before approving an entry.

The event will also introduce the roaming Susan Derbyshire Trophy, awarded for extraordinary courage, spirit and achievement in the water. Because Bellbuoy has never only been about winning.
