Spend your second week getting to know a side of South Africa that most visitors never see. You’ll work alongside local people, contribute to projects chosen around genuine community needs, and spend time learning about life in Walmer Township.

You might paint a community facility, help create a vegetable garden, work on a school project or simply spend time with people whose lives are very different from your own.

The point isn’t to arrive as someone who has come to “fix” a community. It’s to arrive willing to listen, learn, work and connect. Because conservation doesn’t happen in isolation. People and the natural world are part of the same story.

5 July – 13 Aug THE PENGUINS NEED PEOPLE

African Penguins are disappearing. Their world is changing faster than they can adapt to it. Food is harder to find. Their breeding colonies are under pressure. Oil spills, habitat loss, climate change and the way we use the ocean all take their toll.

But conservation isn’t an abstract idea when you’re standing beside an injured bird. It’s a penguin in your hands. It’s preparing the fish that will keep it alive. It’s cleaning a rehabilitation pool. It’s watching a bird recover enough strength to return to the ocean. And sometimes, it’s knowing that the small job you did that morning was one tiny part of keeping another animal alive.

That’s what your six weeks are about. Not watching conservation happen. Being a part of it. YOUR DAYS WILL BE HANDS-ON There is nothing glamorous about conservation every day. Some mornings you’ll be tired. You’ll get wet. You’ll smell like fish. You’ll clean things that need cleaning. And you’ll probably laugh a lot. You’ll work alongside the conservation team at SANCCOB preparing food, caring for birds, maintaining rehabilitation spaces and helping wherever you’re needed. You won’t know exactly what each day will bring—and that’s part of it. Because somewhere along the way, the work stops feeling like something you’re doing for a programme. It starts feeling like something you’re doing because these animals need you.

Life Outside Conservation

When you’re not volunteering Monday through Friday (some Saturdays required), there’s plenty of time to enjoy South Africa’s Adventure Coast. THE OCEAN IS PART OF YOUR HOME. South Africa’s coastline isn’t just something you’ll look at from the shore. You’ll experience it. You’ll learn to dive beneath it, swim in it and spend time on it.

You’ll see the places where penguins, dolphins, seals, whales and seabirds share the same ocean—and begin to understand that conservation isn’t about protecting one species in isolation. It’s about protecting the ecosystem they all depend on.

• Full-Day Big Five Safari Experience – AND THEN, GO WILD. After weeks of working with penguins and living beside the ocean, you’ll head inland. One unforgettable day. Elephants. Lions. Rhino. Buffalo. Maybe something unexpected. You’ll experience two very different sides of the Eastern Cape—from the immense landscapes of Addo Elephant National Park to the intimate thrill of a private reserve. It’s a reminder that conservation isn’t only about the animals you came to South Africa to help. It’s about a whole continent of life worth protecting.
